Once a camper, always a camper. If you were raised to love the outdoors and family vacations meant pitching a tent, cooking over an open fire, bike riding, fishing, and hiking, you’ll likely want to share these same experiences with your own children. There’s no age requirement for camping, which means infants and toddlers can enjoy the experience right alongside their older brothers and sisters. But before you load up the family car and head out, there are a few things to keep in mind. Check out these tips for camping with kids.

1. Pack Enough, But Not Too Much

It’s sometimes difficult for parents to fight the urge to overpack. This is especially true when you have small children. Pack ‘n plays, bouncy chairs, swings, toys, and electronics. You bring anything that’ll help keep them quiet and entertained. But the truth is, you don’t have to. If you’re tent camping, invest in a large tent big enough for a portable crib. Depending on your child’s age, they can sleep snuggly beside you or roll around freely if there’s enough space. A stroller is perfect for walks and hikes but can double as a comfortable and safe place for your baby to relax and enjoy being outdoors with everyone. Bring a few small toys and books but remember, most campgrounds are equipped with countless amenities from pools and playgrounds to organized games and activities.

2. Stick to a Routine

Vacation is about fun and relaxation. But when it comes to kids, routine is key. This doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun and splurge on things like make s’mores for dessert or letting the kids stay up late. But try to do so in moderation. If small children are accustomed to eating breakfast or waking at a certain time, try to keep them on this schedule. Eat lunch at the same time, when possible, and schedule your day to accommodate naps for children who need their sleep to feel energized, happy, and well rested. Obviously, if you’re taking an infant along, bottle feedings need to follow a certain schedule so bring along the diaper bag and have bottles ready to go if you’re on a road trip or exploring near the campground. If there’s one thing that you can definitely leave behind when going camping with kids, it’s their electronics. There’s no place for iPads, iPods or tablets on a campsite. Not to mention, if you’re tent camping, you’ll be hard pressed to find an electrical outlet to charge your devices. Take advantage of being outdoors. Take hikes with your children, go fishing, bike riding, and explore the grounds. Some campgrounds offer golf cart rentals which will allow you and your family to tour the campground and easily access the main office, laundry, showers, and bathrooms. But if you expect your kids to put down their electronic devices, you may need to follow suit and take a break from your cell phone.

4. Let Your Kids Get Involved

If your want your children to be excited about the camping experience, let them lend a helping hand. If there’s one thing kids love to do it’s to feel part of the action. Collecting firewood? Let the kids come along and carry the kindling and smaller sticks. You can always use an extra hand when it’s time to pitch the tent. Let your kids hand you the parts you need or hammer in the stakes with your assistance. They’ll especially love climbing inside and arranging the sleeping bags and pillows. When it comes time to cook, make it a group event. Kids can easily set the table and help clean-up. You’d be surprised how many “chores” your children will gladly do while camping.

5. Light the Way

Having ample light on your campsite is extremely important for safety, especially when you’re camping with small children. A fire can help with this but it’s also one of the dangers children and parents should be aware of. Make sure the kids know that the fire is hot and potentially dangerous. There should be no running or playing near or around the fire. Toddlers are naturally clumsy and one wrong step could be disastrous. Add additional lighting to your site by investing in lanterns, hanging lights, or other decorations. The great thing about campsite lighting is that you can be creative! Depending on the season, you can hang festive lights. If you’re a sports fan, try getting lights that show your team allegiance. Simple white lights or bulbs can easily do the trick. Lighting helps everyone safely navigate the space and makes performing tasks like cooking, clean up, and socializing easier. Plus, campsite lights are fun and inviting.

Some parents hear camping and kids and anticipate a nightmarish experience. But it doesn’t have to be! With a little preparation, forethought, and patience, every member of the family will have a memorable experience.
