How to Make a Suet Cake Bird Feeder

It’s great fun to watch the birds in the Fall and Winter time (or anytime if you’re like our cat). I purchased a suet cake bird feed and holder and remembered making something like this when I was a kid. Below are the instructions on how to make a Suet Cake:

What you will need:

  1. Cheesecloth
  2. Suet (I purchased mine from Meijer’s in the meat department)
  3. Wild bird seed
  4. Natural peanut butter
  5. “Mold” (I used the plastic container the suet cake I purchased came in)

Steps:
Heat up the suet slowly in a skillet and drain into a cheesecloth over a pan. This will remove any meat that might be left in the suet.

After the suet has drained through the cheesecloth you can discard the cheesecloth and anything in it.

Mix in approximately 1 cup of peanut butter and the same amount of bird seed.

Pour mixture into the mold and allow to dry for several hours.

After suet cake has dried it should pop out of the mold. Place the suet cake inside your suet basket.

Hang on a tree and watch the birds enjoy their tasty treat!
