Featured Outdoor Blogger: Ken from Big Grey Rocks

Your name: Ken Schmaltz
Your blog: Big Grey Rocks

What is your favorite outdoor activity?
Anything that gets me above the treeline. Ever since I scrambled up Heart Mountain at the age of 11, nothing has been able to compare to that feeling of being on top of the world.

Any favorite places for your outdoor activity? Favorite camping spot, fishing spot:
I have a strong sense of place in the Canadian Rocky Mountains west of Calgary. I grew up playing in those Big Grey Rocks, and I feel most at ease when I’m in/on them. I can see my two sons developing that same sense of place, and it’s brought us closer in the last few years.

When did you get interested in your favorite outdoor activity?
In Boy Scouts we had an amazing leader who got us out hiking a lot. I backpacked the West Coast Trail when I was 12. That was probably the outdoor experience that sealed the deal for me.

Are you doing anything to teach others about your activity? Helping kids out, teaching classes, youtube videos, etc..
I lead family hikes through the outdoor group I co-founded, the Calgary Outdoor Recreation Association. In a lot of ways, these are my favorite mountain adventures. Re-experiencing the wonder of the mountains through the eyes of my two sons has renewed my passion for the mountains. I’m also executive director of Crossing the Divide Experience, a non-profit organization that takes disadvantaged youth into the backcountry of the Canadian Rockies.
