Hiking at Big Bone Lick State Park

by Justin on September 7, 2012

Hiking is one of our favorite things to do when we are out camping. Almost all parks now have at least a shared website off of the DNR and some even have their own site that lists tails and lets you know the difficulty and length of the trail. Normally the easy to moderate. Nothing too extreme for us. Just getting out and enjoying nature. The pics I’m posting are from when we went to Big Bone Lick State Park in early July of 2012. The trails there are pretty quick so we didn’t bring along a day pack or trail mix. The trails are fairly hilly up near the campgrounds. It was a nice downhill walk to the lake. No one was there fishing (it was almost 100 degrees outside). We walked around the lake a little before deciding to head back up to the campsite. The trail to the buffalo’s is a little less hilly and easy to maneuver.

We didn’t get to cook over our campfire because of an open burn ban. I called ahead of time to see and that’s why I brought my small camping grill. But hey we got to cook outside so I can’t complain. The pool was also open and pretty busy that day.

Big Bone Lick State Park also has some buffalo’s out on one of the trails. Well, they’re not just wandering around the woods. They are in a fenced off area along one of the trails. When we visited in April of this year there was a baby buffalo only a couple of weeks old. I will post a pic of the little buffalo also. Curious about Bin Bone’s odd sounding name? Here is a page about the history of Big Bone Lick State Park.

Sorry no pics of the kids. My son took the pic of me. I should have snapped one of him but we weren’t taking our time much. It was hot in the woods with the trees keeping the days heat on us. I have a post coming up of our hike at Boone Cliffs that I got my son’s picture.

What does your family like to do when they are out camping? I would like to hear about fun things others do. Maybe give us some ideas of things to do when we’re out camping. Leave a comment and let me know. Thanks!!
