I have to admit I had not thought of using Space Bags when we go out camping. I just figured it was to store clothes I might wear again someday. I was wrong about that! When you’re camping you want to conserve space as much as possible. This is even more true when you’re back pack camping. Bringing everything you need into the woods in your back. But it’s good for casual campers too. Everyone is limited on space and Space Bags give you what you need most: more space.
I really like the idea of compressing all of my clothes. It will get more in my backpack or even save more room in the tent. When you’re camping as a family you have a lot of clothes to bring. We usually plan on at least 2 more days worth of clothes than what our stay is. And that can start taking up a lot of space. Using Space Bags you will claim back some of that much needed space. The kids will also enjoy helping when you’re using Space Bags. Have a contest to see who can get the most air out of their bag. I had some trouble packing my space bag at first. I just assumed the full arrow was relative. No, it means don’t put stuff past that line, otherwise it’s not going to shut airtight.
Why use Space Bags when you’re out camping? Here are some pro’s I found:
- Empty the bags are very compact
- I was able to compress things to about 1/2 their site
- Items in the space bag will stay dry as the bags are water tight
- Easily compressed my sleeping bag to about 30% of it’s original size
The biggest down I found was packing the bags and the sealing them. Maybe it was just me but I felt like I had to compress my sleeping bag and pillow in to get it to seal. I also feel like the plastic thing that seals the bags needs to be a little stronger and maybe physically attach to the bag somehow. Mine fell off a couple of times. And small objects and camping mean something is getting lost, at lest with us.
Tip: Put your blow up beach balls and water rings in a space bag with your towels. Then everything is together and organized when it’s time to go for a swim.
Another tip: use a separate space bag for dirty clothes. I recommend the large size. MAybe a couple depending on how long you’re going and the size of your family.
Overall I really recommend the Space Bags. Space Bags does what every camper wants: they give you more space. The one thing that is always at a premium when going outdoors.
