Taking the kids out shooting

by Justin on May 28, 2012

Shooting guns is something I don’t get to do as much as I used to and my son really enjoys shooting guns. My girlfriend and her son had never shot a gun before and were really excited to be able to shoot a gun. We loaded up our cooler with some snacks and water (it was in the mid 90’s) and headed out to my Grandpa’s farm to do some target practice. Our guns were simple, a Daisy BB gun for her son who is younger than my son, and a Ruger 10/22 for my son, my girlfriend, and myself. The Ruger is easy to shoot and .22 shells are pretty cheap.

We had a great time. It was a little warm but we made the best of it and kept ourselves well hydrated. The kids enjoyed the time outside away from the TV and video games and my girlfriend and her son also learned a new skill. We will definitely be back out at my Grandpa’s farm to do more shooting in the future. Next time maybe we will bring a shot gun and try some clay pigeon shooting. Getting out for that time definitely was better than being couped up in the house.

Just found your blog. Great post! I try to take my son shooting on a regular basis. The weather hasn’t been very cooperative here lately (either too hot or storming), but we need to get back out there. There are some indoor ranges in the area, but the outdoor range I go to is much more relaxed and hidden away in a wildlife management area. Very peaceful and often we’ll have the range to ourselves.

Thanks for the compliment Jeff. I have never been to any official ranges, we are lucky to have my Grandpa who has a large farm to shoot on. I might see if there are any local outdoor ranges.
