Fun Things to Do While Camping

Looking for fun things to do while you are out camping? I have just a few things I like to do while on camping that are fun for both for me and kids:

  • Bring a frisbee. Play disc golf using trees for the holes
  • Bring your ladder golf. It can be bought here or you can make it for yourself out of PVC pipe and buy the balls on ebay.
  • Go fishing! Fishing is a great pastime and you never know when the fish will be biting good.
  • Play cornhole! (Knock it off you perv!) Go here for more information about cornhole.
  • Find a trail and take a hike by foot or by bicycle
  • Go swimming
  • Go tubing
  • Bring a deck of cards or Uno cards
  • Bring books or magazines
  • Pack a chair or hammock to just sit back and relax!
  • Toss a football

These are just some things we have done while camping. Please feel free to post your comments about what you or your family does for fun while camping.

  1. Ladder golf is my favorite. I have a cornhole set but I’m horrible at that game!

  2. I have to say I’ve never been camping but we do have summer/hunting home on the water. Fishing is always fun, sitting out by the fire, getting some sun…just relaxing.

    I stumbled!

  3. Yeah the fire is a great way to relax. I can’t believe you have never been camping.

  4. Jody, it is a crime to have never been camping before!

Fishing is the best thing to do while camping – although, we’ll also bring a deck of cards along.

We always end up making up our own games. My friend Ginny conceived of an amazing rendition of Quiddich to play with trees and a golf ball. Roasting our meal over the campfire and telling stories is also a great pastime.

  7. sharkbytes – Check out the other blogs in the comments. They have great outdoor blogs.

Jessica – Yep cooking by the campfire is always a great time I’m not familiar with Quiddich.

I have to say everytime we go camping were always with our big family and riding four wheelers and dirt bikes (of course at campgrounds that permit it or we even own our own campground)but when that’s not allowed sitting around the fire and hanging out with family and during the day sometimes a must to is minigolf (what campsite doesn’t have a minigolf)

  9. Megan – Four wheelers are great fun! We took my Dad’s out when we went camping on family property. Mini golf is fun and we always check to see if the campground has a pool.

  10. norweigen golf is awesome… horseshoes anything like that, that you only do when you go camping. I’ve also seen ice cream makers that you just put the ingredients in and roll around from a Hunting and Camping Gear Site. They have a bunch of odd ball stuff that might be fun to try camping.

  11. There are camps with mini golf?! Wow!

Most our campgrounds have pools – one pool is called the Snake River, another is called the Imnaha River, another is called Twin Lakes….

    :)

  12. Our family camps alot at a resort called last valley lake. They have all kinds of fun stuff to do they have a mini golf that the kids just love.

  13. What an awesome suggestion. Taking a book camping. I’m going to plan a camping trip around fishing and reading. I will take my kids to the library and have them pick out 5 – 10 children books about the outdoors and camping and fishing. And then we will go and just have a ball of a time camping, fishing and reading! Thanks for the suggestion.

  14. Just back from a moonlight ski and thinking it’s time for the annual winter camping trip. Nothing like a crystal clear night at 8,000 feet or so. As a camp activity, we put on the skis and headlamps and schuss out across a big park.

Found a number of miniature games for camping at a website, http://www.gofastandlight.com/ . There’s much to choose from, from a mini ‘Etch a sketch’ game and checkers to miniature playing cards. I purchased the playing cards, and I will be getting more games before my next camping trip.

  16. Great site expresso! Thanks for the tip.

  17. I’ve never been camping before either. :(

Anyhow! I’ve featured this in my Sunday Spotlight. Thanks so much for a great post!

  18. Great information here and all fun things to do. I never understood people that would bring laptops or other electronics to a campsite. That ruins the whole experience.

  19. I agree with RV club partially. If I’m camping in a park for an extended period of time (more than a couple of days) it’s nice to have my e-mail so I can keep track of my business.

  20. All the years our son was growing up and living at home we would go camping. He is now 23 and we haven’t been camping for a few years. My health was a real issue for the last 5 years and I have been a little scared to leave home if you know what I mean, here I am only a 2 minute drive to the hospital.

Last year was the first year I felt healthy enough to get out do anything away from home. Even got out a few times and did some fishing with a friend.

This year we are planning to do a bit of camping again. It will be nice to see all this snow go so we can get outdoors again.

  21. Good list for camping. I had never heard of the game cornhole before. One of the nicest things about camping is the relaxation and realizing that there is no pressure to do anything at a certain time. That’s what makes it so fun!- Nate

  22. Nate – Yep the relaxation is awesome! We were going camping this weekend but it’s too wet to break out the four wheelers.

    ALRiGHt, My sister and i are going camping in our back yard and we are just going to be like do makeovers and stuff… BUT! we are going to have a campfire. We are looking for something to do like that we could possibly do in our city backyard.!!!!! HELP :}

  24. For me, the most exciting thing about camping is the cooking on the gas stove. I know it’s sad, but each to their own :o )

  25. Last year I was introduced to cool game called Bolo Golf – it’s sort of like horseshoes, but you use golf balls! On a rope about 18 inches long, a golf ball is attached to each end – you swing the rope and try to have it land on a target about 20 feet away – hard to explain, but I’ve seen a similar game in stores and bought it right away.

  26. @dilly I have seen it called ladder golf. It’s great fun. We play it with rubber balls on the end. Cuts back on the crying kids.

  27. Thanks Justin! I’ve heard it called a few things, but not ladder golf, but that makes sense – the target is a 3-layered sort of step ladder? Different points for getting it on the top rung, 2nd & bottom rung?

I’m curious – did you buy it or make it? I’m from Montreal & I’ve never seen it in a store…

  28. Yep different points and you can also knock someones throw off.

My step dad made the set. He used PVC pipe. Everything is glued together except for the base so it can be stored easier.

  29. Your step dads set sounds like what I’ve seen used in 1000 Islands – a bunch of boaters made their own sets and they also can be taken apart & stored in a bag. I found a similar game at Canadian Tire – I think it’s called Spin It – same idea but hard rubber balls attached to a rope and you throw at a spinning wheel. The wheel has 6 colours and if your throw lands on green, you get 6 points, blue is 2, red is minus 6 and so on. Fun, but harder than ladder golf! At least I didn’t have to make it!!

  30. Great suggestions! Our family’s favorite is hide-and-seek. We keep the radius small just to play it safe and we split the kids up between me and my wife. One of my all-time favorite camping stories involves my little ones and I searching for my wife and the other little one together only to find they’d outsmarted us and had been hiding in the TENT the whole time!

  31. I love to go goldpanning while camping. It’s a fun activity you can do with the whole family and the great thing about it is the price of gold is now almost $1000 an ounce. After that my next favorite thing to do is jump in a river and go swimming to cool off after a hard day of rock hounding.

  32. I always make sure I have plaster paris with. Its great to cast an animal print that you may find my the lake or river! Or if you don’t find any of those prints you can cast your childs hand in the sand.

  33. Here’s a couple to add to the list:

Practice some land navigation. Using a GPS or even just a compass, practice running a course using points, elevation and terrain identification techniques. You’ll never know when you might need to use them!

Do some star gazing. Night time in the wilderness is a great time and place to view constellations, stars and planets.

After 26 years in the Army, I can honestly say we never ran out of things to do!

  34. Good ideas….first camping trip with kids coming up this summer so will definately take the rods and the frisbee! :-)

  35. I absolutely adore camping, my mates and I make it our duty to go every year just before summer on our annual camping trip. We toss the footy, play card games, swim and hike but nothing can beat the raw enjoyment of cooking off the campfire flame. I’ recently getting into fishing, and have been learning all that i can off http://www.knowyourfishing.info its a great place to learn the tricks and tips of how to catch a fish. I’m honing my skills for our next camping trip were i hope to catch, scale, gut and cook a fish. I can’t wait to try it.

  36. Kayaking is my all-time favorite camping activity. I find it amazing how we never seem to run out of things to do. No tv, no video games…and yet there’s still not enough hours in the day to do all we want while camping. Cornhole??? never heard of it.

    • Kayaking sounds fun Jim. Never done that. Been out on a boat fishing before :] Cornhole is a mid-western thing maybe even just the Cincinnati area.

we always take a beach ball to play “volleyball” in down times. Bikes are great too! Don’t forget the Jiffypop :0)

  38. There are alot of fun things to do to keep you busy while you are camping. From fishing, playing cards, games to doing crafts. The children enjoy doing crafts and this keeps them busy for hours. I have enjoyed scrapbooking, crocheting/knitting around the campfire. We enjoy taking evening walks around the campgrounds. I always saw campers playing the bean bag game or the other game mentioned and did not know what they were called, now I know.
