Tips to Pick a Camp Site

by Justin on September 9, 2008

Camping TentI got these tips last night wile I was watching Without a Paddle on TV. The host had the editor from Backpacking Magazine with him. The host asked the editor about some tips to pick out your camping site and here are some camping site tips:

  1. Look up. If there are dead limbs do not camp under them.
  2. If bugs are a problem move higher. Mosquitoes cannot fly in winds greater then 7 MPH.
  3. If bugs are not a problem and it’s getting cold at night camp at lower elevations.

I admit I never thought about the first one but that is a big one. The editor said someone had been killed by a falling branch. Stay safe while camping!

I honestly didn’t know about the 7mph rule when it comes to mosquitoes. That is an excellent piece of info to have.

Hmm…the first tip seems like such a common sense thing to do, but I must admit I’d never thought of it either!
Thanks for sharing it with us.

Number one above is a big one for us Cincinnati area folks who had the really bad wind storms about a month ago. I heard lots of trees creaking during that storm.

These are great tips for everyone. Here in Central Florida there is a lot of camping in the Ocala National Forest. Rotted timber and mosquitos are always a problem. There is no higher elevation so you better have the repellant and mosquito net with you.

@Karen – I’m so glad we do not have to have a mosquito net here in Northern KY 🙂
