Funny story about red oaks. While in college in 1970 I decided to germinate some acorns in my dorm room and subsequently transplanted them into larger containers. The dorm room lacked direct sunlight so I would leave them on a sill at the end of the hall during the day. One day they disappeared and I suspected the usual college pranksters. I decided to ask one of the custodian ladies who were like moms to us. When I asked if she had seen my trees her eyes got large and she said that the dorm dean had them. The dean?! I went to his office where he was speaking with another gentleman and he motioned me into the office. He said, "Are these yours"? of course, they were and the other man said, "Nice looking red oaks. Did you start them in your room"? "Red oaks"?, the dean queried. It was never said but I think that I was a suspected marijuana grower. Boy, was he embarassed. The trees still grace what was once my parents home. Smoke oak (on food), not dope!

Nice post. Have a couple of the big oaks in my backyard, as well. Always enjoy the squirrels. Part of the fun will be watching the tree grow over the years. Did the rest of the Cub Scouts plant theirs at home, as well?
